A blog detailing our adventure as Americans living in Canada. It started out so innocently.
It’s been pointed out to me that I’ve misspelled ‘About’. It was intentional. It’s an American misperception that Canadians pronounce the word ‘about’ as ‘aboot’. They don’t. At least not any Canadians I’ve met so far. But many Canadians do say ‘aboat’.
At least that’s what it sounds like to my ears and it makes me giggle darn near every time. Americans pronounce the word ‘abowt’ like the ‘ou’ in ‘ouch’. Ken and I made this observation after we’d been here no terribly long and I found this blog talking about the same thing.
And don’t get me started on ‘pasta’.

Pasta is like someone making fun of an Italian-America saying past.
Like, you say dat again, I gonna punch you pasta dat light pole…
And we say abowt. I’ve never heard anyone here say aboot (unless they knew Americans were listening and they were trying to mess with them – like we make a point of saying eh? and over-pronouncing the U in neighboUr or laboUr or favoUr a lot when we know you’re in earshot).

No, I think aboot is just a really cartoonish sort of stereotype. Some people (not all, by any means) do say it so that it sounds like “aboat” and it makes me giggle every time…just like when people say “eh”. So that’s all just you guys messing with the American, huh? Don’t stop because it makes my day! 🙂

(I found your blog through NaBloPoMo). I’ve lived most of my life in places where I “had an accent”. I grew up in NYC and my New York City accent follows me whereever I go. I have been to Canada several times (never Alberta, though) and I love the “Canadian accent”. I enjoyed the 1-1-13 post and your pictures – what a beautiful area you live in Good luck with NaBloPoMo.
Thanks! I know what you mean because being from Georgia, people hear my accent almost immediately. Everyone here says something to the effect of, “I thought I heard a twang!” when I tell them where I’m from. And good luck to you, too!
